FARINGDON
Apparently Old English 'fearndun'='bracken hill'. But the consistent two syllable first element is most unexpected (contrast the early spellings of FAREHAM). Instead the first element may be the related hypothetical adjective 'fiernen'. The ecology is unclear as both parts of the modern village are on the chalk below hilltops capped with clay-with-flints.
